Eddie Murphy is set to reprise his role as Axel Foley in a television version of Beverly Hills Cop.

The 51-year-old actor is set to take up the position in a show focussing on the career of his on-screen son Aaron Foley, who has followed in his father’s footsteps and gone into the police force.

The pilot, which if well received could form the basis for a full series, will show Aaron working in the fancy 90210 area instead of his father’s old beat in Detroit, attempting to escape Axel’s shadow as he polices the rich and famous.

Murphy, who is co-producer of the show alongside The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, will appear in this first episode and could become a regular on-screen presence if the pilot proves successful. No other actors have been linked with the show as of yet, but an early favourite for the role of Aaron is Saturday Night Live star Jay Pharoah.

Beverley Hills Cop was the biggest hit film of 1984, with the 1987 sequel directed by the late and great Tony Scott enjoying similar box office success.

However, the third instalment was received badly by fans and critics alike, and followers of the antics of Axel Foley will no doubt be anxiously watching to see if the TV series delivers.
