Sorkin Sacks All of ‘The Newsroom’s Writing Team, Except For His Ex

The Newsroom has received mixed reviews on both sides of the Atlantic since it debuted last month (this month in the UK) and it seems that creator Aaron Sorkin has taken the criticism to heart and ditched his whole writing team – with the exception of ex-girlfriend Corinne Kinsbury – ahead of the second season.

Bosses have been quick to play down the change and in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, HBO explained that it’s perfectly normal to completely overhaul a scripting group. “Every year each show reassesses the needs of its writing staffs,? read the release. “This process is nothing out of the ordinary.?

The Newsroom, a show based around a failing TV News show, has been called “a dramatically inert, infuriating mess” by The Huffington Post and has also received criticism for ridiculous dialogue and questionable portrayal of women.

Sorkin himself has also been criticised for hogging the credit for the whole series after employing a sweat-shop of writers to come up with scripts, but he explained the writing process in an interview with Vanity Fair a few months back.

“I create these shows so that I can write them,? he said flatly. “I’m not an empire builder. I’m not interested in just producing. All I want to do is write. I came up as a playwright—writing is something you do by yourself in a room.

“That said, I couldn’t possibly write the show without that room full of people. I go in there, and we kick around ideas. I’m writing about all kinds of things I don’t know anything about. So they do research for me.?

The Newsroom continues on Sky Atlantic on Tuesday 24th July
