Gary Linekar To Leave MOTD For BT?
The former England striker has been fronting the Beeb’s Euro 2012 coverage over the last month, he’ll be returning to present the Olympics at the end of July and his talents have not gone unnoticed.
BT who recently snapped up rights to the Premier League in a record-breaking deal are thought to want him for their footy anchor and are reportedly trying prise him away from the BBC.
Linekar is thought to have had a pay-cut on his current deal with the Beeb – as a part of their budget-cuts – and he currently commutes to Manchester from his home in the South, which could leave him open to an approach from BT.
“Gary Lineker’s agent has been on expressing Gary’s interest,” a BT source claimed according to The Mirror.
“Obviously we’re keen that our coverage is hosted by a big name presenter with a proven track record, and few people in sports broadcasting can boast Gary’s credentials.
“He’s popular and experienced, and looking for a new deal at exactly the right time, so everything is falling into place nicely.”
An insider explained that BT are desperate to become the biggest name in English football and believe that the former Spurs striker could be a crucial factor in making it happen.
“We have paid an enormous amount of money for the games, so it has to be a success.
“The budget for presenters is a secret, but suffice to say there is a big chunk put aside for the main host and some pundits, and that should be adequate to tempt someone away from another broadcaster if necessary.”
