Nearly 20 years after its publication, Sebastian Faulks’ gripping WWI novel Birdsong will be getting the BBC drama treatment later this month as the Beeb seeks to replace the monumentally-popular Sherlock (which finishes on Sunday *sob*). Eddie Redmayne stars as Stephen Wraysford, Clémence Poésy stars as his love interest and the prolific Abi Morgan is on screenwriting duties. Critics have pointed out that January has already been an excellent month for Sunday night drama and bosses will be hoping that this two-parter can maintain the momentum that Benedict Cumberbatch’s detective sleuth has built up in recent weeks..

Birdsong starts on Sunday 22nd January on BBC1
