We have had strong suspicions that television might actually be a load of rubbish for several years, but we never really believed it until lovable rogue Stephen Fry actually went and said it. Modern programming has been dumbed down so much that it makes watching the ITV news seem like studying for a doctorate.

Last night the exhuberant QI presenter blasted the BBC for promoting kids shows like Dr Who and Merlin to bright adults who crave more stimulation (like himself).

“They’re good children’s programmes, wonderfully written, but they are not for adults. I would say infantilism’s the problem,” he told the audience at yesterday’s Bafta TV lecture. “Adults need programming that is challenging, complex, possibly even slightly disturbing and wrong”.
