After a brilliant debut year in which it scooped a series of awards including a Bafta for best drama series, Misfits bosses have confirmed that there will be a one-off Christmas special.

Channel 4 have already recommisioned the show that follows the lives of five youths who contract super-powers while on community service detail for a second series (due to be aired in 2011) and they have announced plans to create a stand-alone festive special on top of that.

Details of the episode have not yet been revealed, but the bosses are obvioulsy enthusiastic to capitalise on the success of a programme which has managed to tap into the all-important 16-34 age group of viewers. Misfits was one of the most popular E4 shows of last year, gaining 766,000 viewers, rising to over a million after TV catch-up was taken into account.

Paul Mortimer, acting head of E4 confirmed that series creator Mark Overman would be penning the special and also took the opportunity to talk-up one of the most anticipated series of next year when he spoke to The Guardian yesterday. “We’re delighted that as well as a second series, we’ll have this special standalone commission as a treat for fans during what will be E4’s biggest Christmas schedule so far”.
