ITV bosses are lining up against the wall in preparation to be shot after they mistakenly cut to an ad break just as England scored their opening goal of the tournament. An estimated 1.5 million fans missed Steven Gerrard’s goal as a Hyundai car ad was broadcast instead.

Whilst the glitch only affected high-definition broadcasts, the technical problem has angered fans many of whom had already missed the winning goal in the Liverpool-Everton FA Cup tie last year.

ITV blamed the unexpected ad-break on “human error?. ITV’s group technology director Richard Cross said: “We apologise unreservedly to viewers for the unacceptable interruption to high definition coverage of the match.”

Are ITV looking for a hat-trick of cock-ups? It appears so.
