Having won the ‘Best Newcomer’ award at the British Soap Awards – which airs tonight if you’ve decided to postpone committing suicide – you would’ve thought Marc Elliott had the public’s support. However, the actor has revealed that not everyone is so keen on his character’s sexuality.

Fans will be aware that Elliott plays Syed Masood who has been wrestling with his sexual identity having begun an affair with Christian Clarke. The role has received varied reactions ranging from the supportive to the disapproving.

Indeed the actor has been heckled on the street by enraged fans who are yet to accustom themselves to the social mores of the present day.

Commenting on this gradual evolution Elliott said: “Since playing Syed I have really got it in the neck when I’m out. A lot of people are supportive but there is still a huge amount of negativity.”

Defending the role he further went on to say: “It’s an incredibly important part. In so many cultures being gay is still something swept under the carpet.”

Perhaps next year he will be nominated for ‘Best Gay Character’. Don’t watch this space if you have a life.
