There was some mild controversy at this year’s British Soap Awards as hit ITV programme Emmerdale failed to win one prize. Despite being nominated in nine categories – almost all of the honours – the show finished the night empty handed having been outdone by EastEnders which scooped up a whopping ten awards.

Lucy Pargeter – who plays the stormy Chas Dingle – expressed her outrage by tweeting her adoring public with the articulate announcement that the West Yorkshire soap had won “F**k all?.

Gracious in defeat, she was joined in her vitriol by fans who had expected better results. Of course this should hardly have come as a surprise as the awards are decided by the voting public so a simple glance at the huge gap in viewing figures would have perhaps rung some early alarm bells.
