LIVE EUROPA LEAGUE FINAL: FULHAM vs ATHLETICO MADRID, Wednesday 12th May, FIVE, 7pm ALERT ME

After reluctantly accepting David Cameron’s long-standing relationship request on facebook last night, Nick Clegg will probably be spending the evening trying to ignore his new boss’ social networking ‘pokes’ and frantically de-tagging himself from the large collection of photos in which he is tearing up the Tory manifesto and shaking hands with Gordon Brown.

What he really should be doing is watching tonight’s Europa League Cup Final, because like his ‘People’s Party’, Fulham FC have the chance to claim some long-awaited glory after countless decades of hanging around in the footballing wilderness. Similarly to the Deputy Prime Minister himself, Fulham’s Secretary of Football Roy Hodgson cut his teeth in the foreign markets. Indeed he spent many years negotiating with footballers in Italy and Switzerland before returning home in 2008 to rescue an incompetent team on the brink of being unelected from the Premiership.

However, since then his party have gone from strength to strength and this year their policies proved too much for the likes of The Juventus Front and The Roman Democratic Movement as they strode towards tonight’s final summit in Hamburg. The Right Honourable Hodgson also managed to side-step the potentially disasterous Volcano Scandal by getting the bus like your ‘average voter in the street’ and only complaining a little bit to anyone who would listen.

Against the delegates from Madrid (who made it by beating the US backed Liverpool lobbying group in the semi-final referendum), Minister of Goals Bobby Zamora will be looking to score some important points and old campaigners Damien Duff and Danny Murphy will also be hoping to finish their careers with a memorable victory.
