Jamie Does Venice Review: Food Ranger
JAMIE DOES VENICE: Wednesday 5th May, Channel 4, 9pm ALERT ME
After wowing us with an inviting introduction to Swedish cuisine, (who knew?) Mr Oliver is back on more familiar ground when he heads to Venice this week. He claims he will be showing us a a new side to the old city, which shouldn’t be too difficult – most tourists never even make it out of Piazza San Marco.
Many of his fans will remember the series Jamie filmed in Italy a few years back and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that he twisted Channel 4′s arm for at least one return to the country during this series. His passion for Italian food and culture is tangible and true to his word, he unearths some fresh recipes which lead us off the beaten path of bolognese and baccala.
As per usual these menus are pretty unattainable for anyone who works 40 hours a week and can’t afford a personal chef, but they still look utterly succulent on television. Oliver’s enthusiasm is as infectious as ever and he is absolutely in his element this week so we forgive him for warning us off “poorer value cheap champagne” when he shows us how to eat raw beef without throwing up everywhere.
His penchant for wearing ridiculous hats is a little more worrying though. Is this a sign that his mounting fame is getting the better of our favourite food personality? We’ve already seen him launch a campaign against the fatties in Britain, is it only a matter of time before he declares himself “bigger than Jesus Christ” and starts going on about third world debt? We can’t decide if it’s more Libertines or Lone Ranger…
