It didn’t take Matt Smith long to win us over as the latest resident of the Tardis, but we don’t know what his new legion of fans will make of his latest project.

In the new BBC2 drama Christopher And His Kind he will will be playing a young Christopher Isherwood, the gay writer whose novel the recent film A Single Man was based on. The programme will tell the story of how Isherwood left his suffocating mother for the opulent and volatile 1930s Berlin.

Seeing as Adolf Hitler was not a fan of homosexuals (or indeed anything which didn’t count as racial genocide) we can expect young Isherwood to find himself in some interesting situations.

“This is a world away from what Matt’s fans will expect. He’s really excited and can’t wait to get stuck in,” an insider told The Sun. Doctor Who fans should not fear however, Smith will be filming the new programme in a break between series.
