Chris Evans is getting a face-melting by angry BBC bosses after making a cheap jibe at departing presenter Adrian Chiles who he is to replace on The One Show on Fridays.

The formerly ginger DJ boasted on his Radio 2 show that he could get rugby pal Matt Dawson a screen-test to co-host on other nights alongside Christine Bleakley.

When Question Of Sport team captain Matt ‘Sir Toffington Smugmug’ Dawson said he would feel like “a warm up act” for Evans the DJ quipped: “You are not the warm up act for me. That is what the other guy thought and look what happened to him.”

Chiles, 43, recently announced he is leaving the Beeb for ITV in protest at losing the Friday slot to Evans.
The under-the-belt blow from Evans could well backfire. A BBC insider told The Mirror: “This will not go unnoticed and Chris will have to explain himself.

“He shouldn’t be seen criticising Adrian for leaving the BBC and shouldn’t give the impression he is extremely influential on a series he has not started on yet. It is hugely unprofessional, the kind of thing he used to do in his boozy days on Radio 1.?

A One Show source who has worked with Chiles at the BBC for years added: “Chris Evans should watch his mouth. Adrian is leaving as one of the most watched presenters in Britain, Chris hasn’t had a hit TV show since the 90s.”

Last night on the early-evening magazine show guest comedian Jimmy Carr, urged to be careful what he says on live telly, said: “What could I possibly mention that would be awkward?”

Later when questioned about his busy tour schedule by Chiles, Carr joked: “I like to work all the time. I like to work five days a week, I imagine you’re similar.”
