Robin Hood director and cinematic heavyweight Ridley Scott has signed up to bring Robert Harris’ novel Pompeii to the small screen.

Variety reports that the project will consist of four hour-long episodes produced by Ridley and Tony Scott’s Scott Free Television for Sony.

The novel follows a young Roman engineer who finds himself outrunning the Vesuvias eruption. In the mix also are politics and romance which should make for a jam packed miniseries.

Roman Polanski was originally going to helm the project but WGA strikes stood in the way and ultimately delayed a deal.

“Pompeii is a strong and compelling character drama set against a backdrop of a flourishing but ultimately doomed civilization – exactly what makes great event television,”
said Scott of the project.

Helen Verno of Sony said, “The story unfolds as both a love story and a thriller, with the historical, apocalyptic backdrop of a city on the precipice of destruction and characters who are totally relatable to a contemporary audience.”
