ITV finds itself embroiled in a second animal cruelty row after stuffing dogs into tiny cages for gameshow The Door.

The broadcaster recieved nearly 200 complaints following the stunt in which celebrity contestants had to crawl around the metal cages while covered in animal blood and chunks of meat.

Shocked viewers voiced their anger on internet forums. One said: “It’s sick, the dogs look like they’ve been really wound up. They appear aggressive but they’re just frightened – all for a rubbish game show.”

Host Chris Tarrant and co-host Amanda Holden described the Alsatian dogs in the round as “rancid and savage”.

An ITV spokesman has denied it was cruel. He said: “The dogs were ones that are supplied for TV and film work and are used to being in a studio environment. Their handlers were present. At no time did the dogs show discomfort.”
