An animated series based on Ricky Gervais’ podcasts is coming to the UK on April 23.

The Ricky Gervais Show uses clips from his massively popular web-show and puts them to Hanna Barbera style animations. In a bid to break America (or maybe just make more bucks) the show was given its debut across the Atlantic on HBO.

It received mixed reviews in the US, many questioning the point of animating already funny dialogue.

One critic sniped: “It sort of defeats the purpose of TV when you can improve a show by shutting your eyes.?

First airing over there in February, the show, which stars Office co-writer Stephen Merchant and their friend and producer Karl Pilkington, has just been commissioned for a second series.

The 13-parter will air on Channel Four next month.

Gervais told the BBC: “With this second series we would have already done as many episodes as The Office and Extras put together. This can run and run as long as Karl remains a global village idiot.

“I want this to run and run like The Simpsons?
