Barbara Windsor is trying to convince BBC bosses to put on a musical production of Eastenders.

The actress, who plays legendary landlady Peggy Mitchell, wants an Enders’ stage show after it was announced rival soap Coronation Street was planning one to mark its 50th anniversary.

The national treasure is leaving Eastenders later this year after playing Walford battleaxe Peggy since 1994.

Despite her extensive theatre experience she said she wouldn’t want the lead role. She told The Sun: “I wouldn’t like to be the star of the musical. I would want to be second lead, leave it to someone else to take all the c**p!”

The 72-year-old said she would not be retiring and may make a return to the soap.
