Welsh songbird Charlotte Church has promised to be tough on contestants for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Over The Rainbow, a search for the next Dorothy Gale.

During her appearance on This Morning yesterday, the star revealed her plans to be brutally honest but not cruel to the hopeful singers.

“This business all over is harsh – the Press, the general public. People can say whatever like about you, so you have to be quite tough to start off with. It is tough for all of us to say, ‘You didn’t make the grade’ – but that is our industry.”

Church will be on a panel with Sheila Hancock, currently performing in Sister Act on the West End and John Partridge who plays Christian in Eastenders.

Was John Barrowman busy?

On the selection process, Church revealed that it’s not as easy as it looks.

“It’s hard to judge at the moment if anyone will play that role. Who will be the harshest out of the three of us? John can be quite nasty. Maybe John is the most straight talking out of us all but I don’t think any of us are unnecessarily harsh.”

Over The Rainbow starts on Friday 26th March and all the cash from the telephone votes will go to the BBC Performing Arts fund.
