David Milch, creator of Deadwood, has landed Dustin Hoffman as the lead in a new series called Luck.

The show will follow the wheeling and dealing of several gamblers and ex-cons who can’t resist a good horse race.

Hoffman will play 60 year-old Ace Bernstein, who, according to Empire, is ‘an inveterate gambler freshly out of prison.’ The Oscar winner will be accompanied by Dennis ‘F**kball’ Farina who will play Ace’s driver and friend.

Variety also reports that Public Enemies director Michael Mann will be directing the pilot. Hmmm. We’ll be fine with that as long as he’s not planning on staying with the project.

Milch is aiming to start production this month with a January 2011 air date.
