The Brit Awards 2010: Poke Her Face
THE BRIT AWARDS: Tuesday 16th February, ITV1, 8pm ALERT ME
It’s that time of year again folks, the best British musicians (or the most commercially successful in this case) are getting together to give each other a good hard pat on the back.
The Brit Awards have had a chequered history – who can forget Jarvis vs Jacko, Liam vs Robbie etc – but tonight will be the event’s 30th year and it has continued to go from strength to strength in recent times.
Peter Kay will be hosting the celebrations, which will feature performances from Robbie Williams, a controversy-rocked Cheryl Cole, boy band JLS and Lily Allen, but in a year dominated by female artists (and Jedward), crockery wielding mentalist Lady Gaga should be the main attraction.
On the domestic front Florence and the Machine are expected to receive a fair few nominations as their album Lungs has gone from slow-burning success to frenetic chart-topper in the space of 12 months.
There may still be critics who claim that the prize-giving does little to encourage true musical artistry and hands out gongs on commercial success alone, but the truth is that it is still the most important date in the musical calendar and by far the most watchable award ceremony.
If the people want live hits, flashing lights and women waving teacups, then ITV are not the channel to refuse them…
