Super Bowl XLIV: American ‘Football’ Showcase
SUPER BOWL XLIV: Sunday 7th February, BBC1, 10.55pm ALERT ME
While we aren’t exactly avid American Football fans, we have to admit that once a year we stock up on nachos, ignore the the fact that it isn’t ‘real’ football, and get stuck in to the no.1 event in the US sporting calendar.
Super Bowl XLIV (that’s 44 to me and you) will be contested this weekend by the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts, and luckily for us, the fact that it is being staged in Dolphin Stadium, Miami, means it will start at a reasonable time for us Brits.
However despite the fact that kick-off is scheduled for 11.30pm, apparently the champion won’t be crowned until after 3am on Monday morning as sponsors swamp everyone (apart from us license fee payers) with loads of expensive advertising.
If you do tune in to watch Jake Humphreys and some other wildly excitable Americans bring live coverage from the East Coast, you will be joining a potential global audience of 1 billion people.
Yet as Janet Jackson proved in 2004, the Super Bowl is as much an entertainment event as a sporting final and this year The Who will be among the acts to appear at the much vaunted half-time show.
