Popstar To Operastar: Random Celebrities Unite!

If reality TV is coming to the end of its moron-filled shelf life, then it is certainly not going quietly.

We can’t turn on a television any more without being forced to watch Heather Mills ice skating, Jimmy White moaning about a jungle task or Vinnie Jones boiling an egg – and that’s before we put on our rubber gloves and delve into the murky world of the non-celebrity reality talent contest.

ITV really are the masters of the concept though (that’s not a compliment) and the latest thing to role off their juddering production line is Popstar to Operastar, a show in which best-selling recording artists from the world of pop discover if they’ve got what it takes to perform as opera divas. Just what we’ve been missing on a Friday night then…

If that isn’t mental enough for you then wait till you hear who is presenting it – knife-wielding chav-chaser Myleene Klass and green-fingered Alan Titchmarsh (don’t ask).

Happily, even this isn’t the most interesting part of this photo-fit reality show, as ITV have confirmed that the hopefuls will be critiqued by a panel made up of their opera mentors (classical hit-singer Katherine Jenkins and famed tenor Rolando Villazon), two nameless critics, Meatloaf and Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen!

The mind boggles.

Those taking part in this grand musical experiment include Alex James (of Blur), Bernie Nolan (of the Nolan sisters), Jimmy Osmond (of I’m A Celebrity) and some lad from McFly.

We have no idea how this is going to turn out, but we would like to offer our most sincere congratulations to ITV for daring to assemble such an unconventional line-up which has a gardener and an interior designer at it’s centre.

They do say that genius and madness are separated by a very fine line, but we still think we can tell the difference.
