We all thought the expenses scandal was a bit of a joke – all be it a particularly unfunny one.

The joke will be on MPs next year though after the BBC announced plans to turn the political controversey into a “humourous drama”.

The film will be written by Tony Saint (the man behind Margaret Thatcher: The Long Walk To Finchley and Micro Men).

Channel controller Richard Kein said: “This drama seeks to understand the story behind a serious subject by way of a witty interpretation of events.

“To that end I am delighted that Tony Saint is bringing his dry and acerbic sense of humour to the piece.”

The drama will follow US journalist Heather Brooke who approached the House of Commons about MP’s expenses while writing a book on the Freedom of Information Act in 2004.

She was told to get lost, but took her case to the High Court and won.

The film is scheduled for transmission in early 2010.

Just in time for the election.
