Your own medicine is famously distasteful, especially when everyone in America watches it being forced down your throat.

This weekend David Letterman reaped the whirlwind of his various transgressions as his rival talk show hosts went to town on him.

The sharp-witted late night TV star who regularly pokes fun at celebrity misdemeanours, found himself on the receiving end of countless jibes after being at the centre of a bizarre blackmail plot over sexual affairs he had with young female members of his staff.

His arch-nemesis, Jay Leno, was one of the first to twist the knife soon after the scandal broke. “If you came here tonight for sex with a talkshow host, you’re in the wrong studio,” Leno told his audience in his opening monologue.

Before adding, “I have never had sexual relations with any of my staff.” Which prompted a drummer in his studio band to storm off the stage in faux outrage while bandleader Kevin Eubanks asked: “Jay, you’re messing around on me??

Meanwhile, Bill Maher on HBO joked: “I’ve never had sex with members of my staff – the guests, yes, of course, but not the staff.”

It seems that one witty headline from gossip website Gawker sums it up nicely: “Letterman will be haunted by ghosts of Monica Lewinsky jokes past.?
