Ellen DeGeneres Announced As American Idol Judge

Today’s WTF? post comes courtesy of… you guessed it… Fox.

They’ve confirmed that Ellen DeGeneres will serve as the fourth judge on American Idol for season 9, replacing Paula Abdul.

DeGeneres will sit on the judges’ panel alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and newbie Kara DioGuardia. The space Abdul’s absence has left has been previously filled by guest judges Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige and erm, Avril Lavigne, but it looks as though DeGeneres is to become a permanent fixture on the show.

She revealed the news to her Ellen studio audience yesterday, saying: “This is so exciting for me?, though assuring she would be keeping her day job.

A statement from Fox confirmed: “Ellen has been a fan of the show for many years, and her love of music and understanding of the American public will bring a unique human touch to our judging panel?.

DeGeneres said she would be judging as a consumer, rather than a producer, adding that she would be “ the people’s point of view… the voice of what we’re all doing at home?.

Sounds like she’s going to be just as soft as Abdul. As least she’ll raise some laffs, though.
