The head of Channel 4 has announced that Big Brother was not axed for financial reasons – but to uphold the station’s reputation as a “champion of the new?.

When speaking to Digital Spy, Julian Bellamy also told of how 2010 would be a ‘transitional’ year for the broadcaster, leading to a new-look schedule in 2011.

“If we were a commercial broadcaster, our immediate reaction to the end of the Big Brother contract would have been to renew,? said Bellamy.

He went on to explain that despite its cancellation, the show remained commercially viable and was still creating large profits for Channel 4.

“This was a creative decision,? he went on. “It was not done for commercial or political reasons.?

Bellamy also admitted that producers hadn’t given much thought to the final series of BB but confirmed that they would be looking to end it with a bang.

The Channel boss confirmed that “talked about TV? remained one of the key mantras for the broadcaster.

He also hinted that the ‘live events’ feel that BB mastered was something the broadcaster wanted to retain.

So will we be seeing Big Brother again in some other ghastly incarnation? If so we hope to god that Davina McCall is not involved.
