Sci-Fi Channel Changes Name, Geeks Riot

David Howe, the boss of the Sci Fi Channel, has come under fire for rebranding the channel to make more money.

The generic term sci fi can’t be trademarked and has apparently meant that Howe has lost out on business opportunities. So it’s been decided that it will be changed to SyFy and will launch in the US as of yesterday but will appear in the UK later this year.

The ads that are promoting the change have been created by 4creative and are actually pretty impressive, but it won’t appease hardcore fans who view this whole thing as pretty pointless.

Another reason for the rebranding is to draw in a larger audience. Again, pointless. The popularity of science fiction shows has never been higher with recent revamp hit Battlestar Galactica and the ever confusing Lost leading the way.

A site has been set up to petition against the change.

This will probably turn out to be pointless as well.
