The theme tune to ITV’s part-of-the-furniture police drama The Bill is set to be dropped in time for the show’s post-watershed relaunch in November.

The seminal tune, named “Overkill? has played the show in for the last 25 years, and has now been axed in favour of music more conducive to The Bill’s new look.

The 9pm start will mean a darker, grittier tone for The Bill, and “a more immersive experience? for the viewers, commented executive producer Johnathan Young.

There are also rumours of incidental music being introduced to the programme.

Could the show’s sexing-up bring it in line, or competition, with the US cop dramas that have proved so popular of late?

Tune into ITV for a taster of the new-look show in the coming weeks.
