Children’s TV is a perilous place. On the one hand, where better to increase your popularity and exposure than by interacting with kids. On the other, getting gunged and talking to puppets might not do wonders for your credibility.

But who’re we kidding, seeing celebrities interact with kids always raises an eyebrow whether it’s good or bad. In celebration of the release of Nick Jr’s Yo Gabba Gabba! (which has already seen Jack Black and The Ting Tings appear), here’s our list of the most memorable, dignity-shredding children’s show celebrity cameos.

BEYONCE KNOWLES ON WOW! WOW! WUBBZY!

Melismatic warbler Beyonce put in a startling appearance on Nick Jr’s animated TV series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!

Yes, you really did just read the words ‘wubbzy’, ‘Beyonce’ and ‘melismatic’ in the same sentence.

While many would argue that the infamous snooty-booty didn’t have much dignity to begin with, she’s always given off somewhat of an aloof air. Yet this evidence of her playing all three of the Wubb Girlz on the made-for-TV hour special Wubb Idol suggests otherwise.

JOHNNY DEPP ON SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS

Universal heartthrob and all-round good guy Johnny Depp makes an appearance in Spongebob Squarepants as surfing Adonis Jack Kahuna Laguna. Sporting the biggest… um… surfboard you’ve ever seen, it seems even Spongebob isn’t immune to Depp’s charms, “It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen?

Yeah yeah, join the back of the queue.

LARRY DAVID ON HANNAH MONTANA

Creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm Larry David makes a cringe-worthy appearance on Hannah Montana and for once it’s not intentional.

His two daughters feature in the clip too – wonder how much they nagged him before he agreed to do this. Larry’s just being his usual grumpy self but it’s a bewildering cameo.

What’s next, Ricky Gervais talking to Elmo? Oh wait…

RICKY GERVAIS ON SESAME STREET

Sarcastic funny man Ricky Gervais seems to be having a great time talking to castrato fuzzball Elmo in this Sesame Street outtake.

It’s a bit of a far cry from The Office but it’s definitely worth watching to see Gervais ask the important questions. To be fair, when you ask the following, he’s pretty much kept his dignity intact.

“Do you know what necrophilia is?? is possibly the best thing anyone’s ever said to a puppet.

MORISSEY ON CHARLIE’S BUS

Professional misery guts Morrissey and The Smiths make one of the most memorable appearances on children’s TV on an old episode of Charlie’s Bus.

Observe the utter genius of Morrissey when he gets asked where the bus is going and he replies “we’re all going mad?, whilst The Smith’s “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now? plays in the background. Epic.

ROBERT DENIRO ON SESAME STREET

That red fuzzball gets to talk to everyone cool.

Here he is having a good old chinwag with acting legend Bobbie DeNiro. “What else can you pretend to be Mr. DeNiro?? harps Elmo “Well I can be a New York taxi driver, a out of shape boxer or a cabbage?.

The only way this could get any better would be be if DeNiro started shouting “You talkin’ to me?!? right in Elmo’s little red face.

IGGY POP ON PETE AND PETE

Wonderfully subversive surreal Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete and Pete actually had a slew of cameos from Debbie Harry to Steve Buscemi. But one of the weirdest was from Iggy Pop, who drops in to chastise a bully cleaning up graffiti. “Stooge? indeed.

CHRISTOPHER WALKEN ON JACKANORY PARODY

Christopher Walken lends his idiosyncratic delivery to his narration of The Three Little Pigs in this Jonathan Ross spoof of Jackanory.

It’s not really a cameo, but it’s so funny we just had to mention it. Everyone’s childhood would be a much darker place if we’d had Walken instead of the effervescent Kenneth Williams.
