Thinking-woman’s totty Rupert Penry-Jones is back on our screens with the latest series of Spooks and ITV’s upcoming serial killer miniseries Whitechapel. While he’s best known for his role as our favourite, seemingly indestructible (well, until that pesky car bomb) MI5 agent, Adam Carter, OntheBox decided to do a little spy-work of our own to find 10 interesting things you never knew about the man….

1. Any credibility points he may have banked from playing a secret agent on Spooks have flown straight out the window with the revelation that he once narrated Anne Widdecombe’s ‘Father Figure’ story.

2. But he then instantly wins them back with the rather hilarious fact that he once appeared on stage at the Hampstead Theatre, nude and standing full-mast. Apparently he was bored and wanted to provoke a reaction: “But it was a tiny theatre and the audience was mainly Jewish pensioners.? Oy vey.

3. He once dated Kylie Minogue for 9 months in 1999.

4. But then ended up marrying Dervla Kirwan. While most know her as ‘that one that wasn’t Stephen Tomkinson from Ballykissangel’, she’s now officially moved up in the world, holding the status of ‘that sexy voice off the M&S food-porn adverts’.

5. Rupert’s a staunch environmentalist. Fitting considering that Rupert starred in the BBC drama, Burn Up, where he starred as an unfeasibly youthful head of an oil company who slowly wakes up to the fact that ‘duh, my job might actually have consequences.’

6. He was kicked out of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School for being a ‘disruptive influence’.

7. We want his mum to be our mum. Upon hearing he’d been thrown out of the school, his mum simply said “well you hated it there anyway? and then handed him the cheque she had planned to give to the school for tuition fees. Cue a month of clubbing and drinking.

8. He’s not exactly beating himself up over his stalled film career: “I really chased [a film career] a few years ago – I went out for six months, but it just made me miserable. I stopped and came home and did two plays back-to-back and realised, actually I do like acting and I don’t give a fuck about being a film star.?

9. Rupert is now the face of high street-but-still-posh clothing shop Austin-Reed. Apparently he was chosen for his ‘sophisticated model looks, natural charm and innate sense of style.’

10. In a January 2007 New Woman magazine’s World’s Sexiest Man survey of 10,000 women, Rupert was ranked no. 57. While he’s not exactly facially challenged, it’s beneficial to bear in mind that this poll was voted for by women who put Declan Donnelly at no.35 and Gordon Brown at no. 97.
